There are few more delightful theatrical experiences than enjoying a fresh operatic performance in Buxton’s gilded Edwardian theatre and coming out at the interval or the end to savour the memory in the fading light of the elegant Pavilion gardens. The theatre designed by Frank Matcham is used for opera, talks and recitals. This year there are performances of operas by Donizetti and Offenbach, the Marriage of Figaro performed by the Classical Opera Company, a recital by Felicity Lott and talks by Michael Frayn, Claire Tomalin, and Rabbi Lionel Blue among others. And, of course, there is the Derbyshire countryside to explore for walking or visits to the delightful towns and the great houses of Chatsworth and Haddon Hall.
Hotel: We stay at the 3-star Old Hall Hotel, Buxton - reputed to be the oldest hotel in England, one time host to Mary Queen of Scots. Daniel Defoe writing in 1727 and staying at the hotel, said, "This is indeed a very special place." The Old Hall's mellowed walls and many ancient rooms reflect the pedigree of its rich past, yet providing every comfort, cuisine and high technology expected from the best hotels of today. The hotel is surrounded by hills in the heart of England's beautiful Peak District, in the elegant Spa town of Buxton, just across a leafy Georgian square from one of the most exquisite Opera Houses in this country..
