Berlin has always been a new city, although Schinkel, who was responsible in the 1800s for turning it from a provincial town to a new city, built classical style buildings to make it appear much older. The new Berlin of the 2000s has restored many of the old buildings, modernised many such as the Reichstag, and built some astonishing new buildings such as the Federal Chancellery. In Dresden concentration has been on restoring old buildings, in particular the Frauenkirche, a symbol of regeneration and reconciliation. There we hear a concert of Schumann, a native of Dresden. There will also be a performance of l'elise d'amore at the Staatsoper in Berlin.
