Morocco's cultural, artistic and architectural traditions are refreshingly different, excitingly rich. The cities of Fez, Meknes and Marrakech have survived almost intact within their city walls; in their souks the maze of narrow alleys are scarcely changed from Mediaeval times.. The mosques, madrassahs and palaces illustrate the splendours of Moorish architecture, their warm decoration of glazed tiles, intricate stucco work and carved cedar wood, set around quiet courtyards refreshed by the splash of water.. In the distance, the mighty Atlas Mountains rise through cedar-covered slopes to snow-capped peaks, before their lush greenery is extinguished in the tawny plains on the edge of the Sahara. In Morocco, old artisan sills exist alongside more modern techniques.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Fly to Casablanca and drive to Rabat for one night.
Day 2 – In Rabat see the walled Kasbah of the Oudaia. The buildings are largely the work of the ‘Moriscos’, the Moors forced to leave Andalucia at the time of the Reconquest. Continue to Fez for three nights.
Day 3 –Today explore the labyrinth of alleyways in old Fez, the most extensive souk in Morocco. Opening onto the narrow lanes are the madrasas of the oldest university in the world. Traditional tanneries give a splash of colour.
Day 4 – Today we drive to Meknes. The town reached its most important period in the 18th-century under Sultan Moulay Ismael, who set out to build a copy of Versailles. We continue to Volubilis, the most remote base of the Roman Empire.
Day 5 – Today we drive through the Middle Atlas and Beni Mellal to Marrakesh where we stay for three nights.
Day 6 – The day is spent exploring Marrakesh. Here the great golden city walls, fine Moorish buildings and maze of souks are enlivened by the vivacity of Africa. In the square of the Djema al Fna entertainers, storytellers, peddlers of spells, all ply their trade to an enthralled audience. The olive groves of the Menara gardens give welcome shade at midday.
Day 7 – The day is at leisure for independent exploration of Marrakesh.
Day 8 – Transfer to the airport for the return flight to London.
