In the year of 1633, gripped by war, poverty and the Bubonic Plague, the villagers of Oberammergau, in Bavaria, vowed to put on a passion play every ten years if God spared them. They survived, and in 2010, the villagers put on their 41st Passion Play.
Only villagers are allowed to take part, and they devote a year of their lives to re-enacting the life, death and resurrection of Christ. All performers are laymen and pursue their usual careers. For example, in real life, ‘Jesus’ is a psychologist and ‘Mary Magdalene’ works as a flight attendant. By taking on these roles they are fulfilling the promise to God made by their ancestors, celebrating their faith and sharing it with the world, as Oberammergauers have for some 375 years.
The play includes two hours of glorious music, performed by Oberammergau’s 55 strong orchestra, made up of amateur, semi-professional and professional musicians, both teenagers and adults. Combined with impressive acting, the 200-year-old score gives the Oberammergau Passion Play its powerful and emotional impact.
We are privileged to stay at the Hotel Huber, run by the second in charge of the play and prologue. We also have best tickets for the performance. We combine our visit with a stay in Munich.

Itinerary
Day 1 – We fly from London to Munich. Check in to hotel.
Day 2 – Transfer from Munich to Oberammergau. The Passion Play starts in the afternoon. There is a three hour dinner break in the early evening and the Play is completed in darkness. Dinner is included today.
Day 3 – There is time to explore Oberammergau, a typical, small Bavarian village, set in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps in the Ammer River Valley. It is a pretty village with leafy parks and typical Bavarian houses with carved wooden balconies and gardens bright with summer flowers. Transfer back to Munich for two nights
Day 4 – The day is free for independent exploration of Munich.
Day 5 – Transfer to Munich airport for the return flight to London.
