There are three venues for opera in Prague. The Prague State Opera is located in a beautiful building, the former New German Theatre, built in 1888. The opera has a rich artistic tradition and many leading conductors, directors and singers have performed there. The National Theatre is one of the most important Czech cultural institutions and has helped to maintain and develop the Czech musical tradition. The Estates Theatre is regarded as one of the most beautiful historic theatre buildings in Europe and dates from 1783. It was here that Mozart personally conducted the premiere of Don Giovanni in 1787.
